There is a patented instrument for plotting headings and measuring distances that can be set to magnetic north...no need to add or subtract variation. There is also a simple and easy-to-follow set of instructions with a practice chart for learning how to use the instrument. Three punched holes on each side for lashing.

This chart case also makes excellent dry storage for smaller items including food, valuables (identification cards, credit cards etc).
